The Story Behind the Piece

Lumara was photographed along the coastline of Himarë, Albania. I had been carrying this image in my mind for nearly two years before I was finally able to make it. My husband Tim and I spent several days exploring this remote stretch of coast by boat, discovering hidden coves and protected bays. Late one afternoon, after a full day on the water, the sun began to dip behind the land, casting a soft golden glow across the sea. The water had gone completely still, sheltered by the natural curve of the bay, and everything felt suspended in that brief moment before evening. We had already dried off and were preparing to head back when I noticed the light and the glassy surface of the water. I knew instantly this was the moment I had been waiting for. Everywhere else I had tried to create this image, the water had been too active or unsettled. Here, it was perfectly placid. I asked Tim to get back into the water, knowing the reflection and conditions would only last minutes. He trusted the vision, dove back into the water, and within moments the image came together exactly as I had imagined. Lumara is about intuition, about recognizing a fleeting moment and having the courage to act before it passes.
